Rikudou awakened the Rinnegan as a result of becoming the Juubi's jinchuriki...imo.

The Rinnegan is reputed as the most exalted eyes amongst the Three Great Dōjutsu.Only Madara can switch between rinnegan and sharingan because he obtained it "naturally".It is said the Sage of six paths had the rinnegan.It can absorb jutsus.
What i do not understand is why the 10 tails does not use the rinnegan sharingan combination eyes.

I think it was some Godly gift, I think the Sharingan derives from the Juubi itself. I really hope this gets shown in the manga, it'd be nice to know how the Sage obtained the Rinnegan.

Rennigan was originally belonged to jubi . As a result of sealing jubi inside himself so6p awakened it . And this also explains elder son getting sharingan and younger son getting sage body . As uchiha representing jubi's will and younger son representing so6p's .
Uchiha can get rinnegan to at later stage but a senju would never have any visual powers but instead sage mode.
