Most of people in here says rinnegan is the final stage of sharingan,but I will say its wrong because it is a result of mutation of uchiha and senju.To be precises,its (uchiha+uchiha)+senju=rinnegan
To prove it I will explain how it is mutation
Till now we know that Madara possess eternal mangekyo sharingan(I know Sasuke got his EMS,but he just got it and I don't think he knows the full power of it).So did anyone though why Madara couldn't turn his eyes to rinnegan before or there is mention he had rinnegan?
The answer is NO, because he does not have the ability to turn his eye into rinnegan but he knew how to achive it with the help of uchiha's secret tablet.It is the mutation of uchihas and senju which creates rinnegan.That is the main reason why he fought with Hashirama senju,to get senju's DNA to create rinnegan for himself(if I am wrong then why would he agree at first to form a village with senju,who are there enemy and attack the same village later only with the help of Kyubi because he didn't knew the secret of rinnegan at that time).After getting the sufficient amount of DNA of senju in fight,he retreated from the fight(I don't know how he did it but he did it some how).
After the fight he went to some place and started experimenting with his sharingan and senju's DNA(I don't know how many times did he do that) and he succed in getting rinnegan but due the experiment which he had done on his eyes,he got sick and died after getting rinnegan(he said that himself).But before dying due to his knowledge on rinnegan he order Tobi to revive him with the help rinnegan(that's why he wasn't surprised when he was revive but got angry after knowing he was revive by edo tensie).
This shows that rinnegan is not the final stage of saringan, rather it is a mutation.
