Rinnegan doesn't make any sense as an "upgrade" to sharingan

rinnegan as an "upgrade" from sharingan makes no sense to me, and I'm tempted to say that it is a mistranslation.

doesn't upgrade suggest to you that all the original abilities of the sharingan are present in the rinnegan? But whenever madara uses a sharingan ability, he's showing sharingan eyes, and whenever he uses a rinnegan ability, he's showing rinnegan eyes. Why would he need to do that? And for that matter, rinnegan is pretty sweet, but there are abilities that sharingan has that would be occationally useful, but Pain never uses them. Is he locked into the rinnegan because tobi gave him eyes in rinnegan mode, and its stuck that way (like kakashi's sharingan seems to be)?

It seems more sane to me that the rinnegan isn't an upgraded form of the sharingan in the same way that the mangekyo is an upgrade from the standard sharingan. Rather, Madara got his hands on a pair of rinnegan, and figured out a way to swap the two out in battle, perhaps using something like kakashi's kamui. You could say that he "unlocked the eyes" by figuring out a way to use them as well as his sharingan, rather than instead of his sharingan, since, being familiar with the use of sharingan he preferred to keep his sharingan rather than swap out to the rinnegan.

Yeah....never seen Rinnen use genjutsu. But I think it's an upgrade because it unlocks all chakra types.

I agree, but I think madara got the rinnegan because of the senju DNA.

Nagato can't switch to the Sharingan because his Rinnegan was implanted whilst it was in that stage. If he was implanted the Sharingan, and he himself evolved it to the Rinnegan then he would be able to use the other Sharingan abilities. This is only a theory but im pretty sure that is the case.
And im not sure, but I can't remember Madara switching back from the Rinnegan to Sharingan to use the Sharingan abilities since he still has the Rinnegan activated whilst using all of his jutsu's. (Let me go check quickly to make sure).

Edit: Yeh he always has his Rinnegan activated, even when he is only using Susanoo.

so why is a rinnegan active when madara uses susanno(which is a mangekyou sharingan technique)

u r right it makes no sense for sharingan to be upgraded to rinnengan. they have nothing alike when u compare their power. sharing lets u slow time and genjutsu, ms gets u what normal sharingan has plus specials skills, EMS is MS just no counter effect and one new tech. Rinnengan has nothing to do with Sharingan

Uh, But Susanoo is a MS technique. It has nothing to do with Rinnegan, unless you mean that Madara can do MS techniques with Rinnegan eyes activated. Just an FYI.

I know Susanoo isn't a Rinnegan technique, that is what im trying to say. You can use 3 tomoe Sharingan techniques and MS techniques whilst the MS is activated. you can do EMS, MS and 3 tomoe techniques whilst the EMS is activated and you can use any of the sharingan, MS EMS and Rinnegan techniques whilst the Rinnegan is activated. So you don't have to switch back to the Sharingan to use Sharingan jutsu's.
Basically, Rinnegan just gives you 6 new techniqes. And it probably upgrades your Sharingan techniques aswell (Madara's Susanoo has 2 heads, can use jutsu's and can jump etc). Similar to how the EMS upgraded Sasuke's Susnoo and gave him a new technique.
So Rinnegan does make sense as a Sharingan upgrade since you are able to use Sharingan abilities whilst the Rinnegan is activated.

What are you talking about? the only Sharingan tech Madara has used is Susano'o and he's been turning that on and off while still using Rinnegan.

Plus, Rinnegan being the "complete" form of Sharingan does make sense since that's what Rikudou Sennin had and Uchiha are the descendants of his elder son, who inherited his eyes.

The fact that the Sharigan can use Izanagi pretty much tells you other wise. That right there tells you that the Sharigan is very much connected to the Rinnegan.

The nay sayers are right... madara is using the rinnegan with sussano... its just harder to see cause its shaded.

Be that as it may, I like my theory better than what kishi is suggesting.
