I was just thinking about this:

If Nagato was supposed to revive Madara with rinne tensei, why couldn't he revive Jirayia? I was under the impression that he couldn't bring Jirayia back because too much time had passed. Does that mean that Madara lived passed him helping Obito survive the cave in? I'm sure everything will be explained sooner or later, but i was just curious.

Close. Jiraiya's body was digested in one of his summoning's stomachs. There has to be a body too. Not sure about the time though.

Considering that Madara showed us a whole sh*tload of rinnegan abilities I believe Nagato really didn't know the full extent of his power. Or he just couldn't use them to their full extent.
