Rin, or rather Rin's memory, will always be what motivates Obito and keeps him sane. When we see Obito's mind getting torn apart by the Juubi's, we can see that the only thing that keeps it intact are his feelings for Rin, he didn't want to lose her memory. So he pieced himself back together with sheer will and takes over the Juubi, becoming a God.

The reason why Obito does what he does is because of what happened to Rin, and many others like her. Casualties of the Shinobi world. Obito knows he is vile, he is fully aware of his misdeeds, he knows his actions are sinful and evil. And he knows that because he believes that that is what the Ninja system creates, failures like himself.

Obito truly believes that he is a prime example of what the Shinobi world creates, along with a lot of tragedies that have taken place before and are currently taking place in this war.

Obito is trying to create his ideal world, in his mind, that is the only true world. The current one, is just a fake, along with all the people that live in it, including Kakashi and the Rin who died.
