I have a feeling if it goes like this Luffy will get captured while letting the others escape, leading One Piece into another time-skip. Where the crew would be travelling around finding allies to help break him out. Dragon would be one of the allies.

Are you saying when you saw a robot you wouldn't react in the same way? I wouldn't call him an idiot, just a slapstick. He's obviously there for humour, but he's the most normal of the crew and the one most can relate to imo.
