How does it work in canon? Does it seal everything in Danzo's corpse? Or does it seal in another dimension, sorta like the Shingami? Is Danzo conscious during it? Does it activate automatically upon death, or is it manual?

It's confusing. Danzo is clearly conscious and aware of its activation, yet Tobi states that it was set to activate upon his death... :|

As for what it does, Danzo is basically the Jinchuriki of a bunch of bridge right now.

Nah, its set on the user before death and at the exact moment of death, the seal takes effect.
