Im kinda leaning towards someone forcing him to do it, remember as he trained squad 7 abd he put the kunai to sasuke? He stressed that teamwork needed to be used..otherwise they would wind up in a situation like that

This is probably the reason why he gave that example in the team 7 training. Because it happened to Rin and him.
