Re: Religion and soorituality

All I know is that I can feel deep and respectful, emotional about deep moments in life, even though I'm an atheist and I don't like to think that I need to be religious to do so.

I also respect religious things like churches, weddings and funerals, I hate it when I hear about people masturbating inside churches, literally craps there and stuff like that.

I don't know if I would consider myself spiritual or that I am interested in spiritual things I am skeptical about it, I don't know.

I don't think I like spiritual things. When I think about it. But I'm not sure what counts as spiritual.

first you have to define what religion is.

religion could really be anything and so each definition of religion differs from each person.

but we really can surmise that religion is a worship of something. it doesn't have to be a higher being, another entity, or even a person.
it could simply be a thing, like money or fame or a set of morals.

as for "spirituality" then it would tie it into that person's religion.
as long as they are mentally stable in their own perspective, they are spiritually sound.
if they are happy with themselves and satisfied with how they treat others, then they are "enlightened"

It's too complicated to answer with a definite yes or no. First starters, most people's spiritual path is tied to some religious practice that they have learned through cultural or educational means (i.e., "I'm from UK, but I meditate"). Even if they do not adhere to the religion, the influence is undeniable. What does it even mean to be spiritually enlightened? That's a very diffuse term. As a Buddhist, I of course look to Buddha as an example. That is myopic though. Every religion has leaders they perceive as enlightened, each with different attributes defining their schema of the spiritually awakened.

Enlightenment from my perspective can be accomplished (theoretically) without practicing religion, but it is dependent on religion to a large degree. Similar to how many people say "I'm a moral person without religion," while most of their moral framework is derived from their culture's religious background. Religion is heavily integrated into human civilization. Even if you don't believe in something, that does not free you from its influence.

For non-Buddhist religious peoples they would probably argue "no," because spiritual enlightenment comes from directly their higher power. If there is a god then that probably is true.
