Chapter I : Festering Wound

Prologue

The Boy knew he'd have to run the errands again, his mother was sick and his sister, too young. He was okay with helping out, he was just glad they were safe in this Tower, away from the imminent threat of the Torikesu Virus. They had been living in this tower for a couple of years, after being picked up by an Airship in the Land of Fire. They were thoroughly checked for symptoms and taken to the City of Semblence. An elaborate scheme put together by the Council to get survivors from around the continent, revitalize the economy, and subsequently, pull Humanity back together.

It didn't come without it's faults, a large portion of refugees were essentially quarantined in the Airship Tower, even after passing rigorous medical checks. The Airport Tower, a large structure in scale, could house most of them - but it was bursting at its seams. Most of the refugees had been here for much longer than the Boy and his family.

With the start of a new week, weekly ration collection awaited. With the responsibility squarely on his shoulders, the Boy held his family's designated ration ticket firmly, gripping it in his hand, and tied to his wrist by a piece of twine for safety.

"Hold it closely and try not to get distracted, okay? It's important you get back to us quickly, Renard." His mother coughed, her voice echoing weakly.

Renard nods and scurries off. He'd have to make his way lower in the tower, from the midsection where they resided. Rations were often delivered on the lower floors. His feet banged against the hard textured floors as he made his way lower, he'd pass by the usual faces, give them a greeting. A quick nod to new faces he'd not seen before. Renard likes getting to know people, after essentially being forced to never interact with people whilst surviving in the Land of Fire; it was nice to finally hear their stories.

One of the floors seemed to gather a crowd, and as much as he wanted to listen to his mother's advice - Renard had a feeling he knew what those familiar cheers were for. The Crew Members of the designated Airship that would find more survivors. It was brave to go out there and face their potential end, they knew they wouldn't be able to come back if they were to make actual contact with the Torikesu Virus. Renard would forever be grateful to this crew of Shinobi who saved his family, and so he thought it right to spend just a moment to honor them with a cheer.

Eventually Renard would back off from the crowd and would make his way to acquire the rations. His eyes lingered on the Rescue Crew just a little longer, not seeing where he was going and ran straight into something. Renard grunted as he fell back from the impact, it felt like a solid wall; but it wasn't. Renard shook the pain away and looked up; the figure before him was a large hunched over man with a black cloak and a large fisherman's straw hat, white paper strips draped down around the rim, a black face mask underneath. The figure's eyes seemed intimidating, but then, unusually, they softened as they looked down at Renard.

A hand peered out from within the black cloak, splitting the red cloud that adorned the cloak's front parting - reaching out for Renard to take. The Boy took his hand and was pulled up with little effort, he almost flew back into him, but managed to keep steady.

"Th-thank you." The Boy said, his eyes struggling to part from the large robed figure. He looked down at the man's hand and then his own bare wrist... It was missing the ration ticket! He pulled away and began to panic, looking around hurriedly. It had to be around here somewhere, unless it was back in the crowd? Was it taken?? He felt tears begin to build up in his eyes as it was beginning to dawn on him that the ticket was lost.

"Here." The large robed figure spoke.

Renard turned around, a Ration Ticket! It wasn't Renard's, but it was one all the same. Renard took it from him and looked at it - this ticket was for a family of five. The boy's eyes lit up, hopeful - but then it became tainted with guilt. He couldn't take away this family's food.

"A-are you su...?"

"Yes. I do not need it. I am leaving this Tower."
The large robed man cut off the boy and then shambled off slowly.

Renard stood there, dumbfounded. His expression grew into a wide smile as he gripped the ticket tightly in both hands and ran to the distribution zones. As usual, the line was long, even longer now that he had been distracted. He waited.

An hour and a half later and Renard got to the front of the queue, handing over the ticket to one of the guards. The ticket was inspected and then passed to someone else who also began to verify it. Renard was nervous, knowing that it wasn't technically his ticket. A bead of sweat rolled down his forehead. CLICK. The ticket was punched.

Renard was handed a large basket, it was heavy. He held both his arms under it and thanked the distributors, leaving the crowd. As he distanced himself from the queueing refugees, he noticed the robed man from earlier, he was standing amongst the people as they were moving around. The boy wanted to thank him again, he took a few steps down back into the main hall, a smile of gratitude on his face.

As he approached the man he would be interrupted by the odd person passing in his way, stopping a moment but making sure to keep an eye on this generous man. He didn't manage to reach him before the robed man stirred from his spot; his cloak dropped revealing what was beneath. Covering the man completely, were tags of paper with kanji labels on them. They hissed like a struck match.

Renard's smiling face was lit up, his hair flew back as...

The Airport Tower was ripped in half by two explosions, one at the bottom and then another in the centre causing it to segment into two large halves and fall in opposite directions. Screams erupted from the locals as the tower came crashing down.
