Regular genjutsu and it's major flaw or plot hole

I was wondering if anybody could explain how performing handseals could affect an opponent and put them under an illusion.

Sharingan Genjutsu affects the opponents mind by using Hypnosis via the eyes.

Sound based genjutsu affects the opponents mind via hearing.

Hypothetically speaking if we follow the common pattern then smell based illusions would affect a person via sense of smell and taste based illusions would affect via taste.

All of these forms would require an external stimulus using one of the sense to cause the alteration to the opponents mind and cause the illusion to take effect.

Wouldn't it make more sense for regular genjutsu to require physical contact. The user could form the hand seals then transfer the alteration to the opponents brain via the stimulus of touch.

I think the current system of genjutsu via seals is flawed and requires a retcon.

Discuss and please explain if anybody knows how regular genjutsu works.

Smell based Genjutsu was how Naruto was able to beat Kiba.

Smell for smell based genjutsu, eye for eye based genjutsu etc etc. But there is a main point you are missing here. The senses like touch and smell and sight are simply mediums. Thier can be a medium like sight or and the genjutsu transmitted could still be anything from showing an illusion of bad smelling swamps, seeing a horrible image, touching a spiky field full of thorns etc.

You are confusing two things: the medium and the actual genjutsu. The medium can be sight but still the genjutsu can be of touch like itachi hurt Naruto with shurikens inside his genjutsu.

I think your mistaking the two please read over my thread and the replies again. I'm trying to determine the medium for regular genjutsu and why performing hand seals would put the opponent into a genjutsu.

Itachi's shuriken hurt Naruto because they were real and tangible that isn't an issue or relevant to the plot hole.

About the handseals, I think it is done before casting a genjutsu to mold the chakra appropriate for genjutsu and releasing it into the opponents direction.

Itachi's shurikens were not real. They were thrown inside the genjutsu.

I've addressed the issue of moulding and then directing the chakra in the opponets direction. It would have to make contact with the opponet who would realise the change. I don't think any ninja is stupid enough not to realise that a wave of chakra has made contact with them.

I was mistaken in the Itachi fight it seems after using ephemeral he deceived Naruto into looking into his eyes. Itachi also claims he won't use his Mangekyou against him. Itachi can use genjutsu upon genjutsu the medium for him are the eyes of his opponent.

Chakra which is released through hand seals probably can't be felt. Kisame was caught by kurenai genjutsu. Itachi noticed her disappearing and copied her jutsu with his sharingan.
