He killed Rin....we still do not know why. It could also just bee seeing a person you care deeply for die. Obito seeing Rin die could have activated his Mangekyou...and due to the unique linkage between Obito and Kakashi it could have worked for him as well.

you can awaken it by killing someone close to you or experiencing it.

Not necessarily your best friend...It's enough to experience great loss/shock of someone close's death.
