I'm making this thread to clear an extremely common misconception. There are so many people who believe that when you play Pokemon (1st gen) you are Ash Ketchum, and at the end of the 2nd gen games you fight Ash Ketchum. This is false.

Let's explain it like this. There are Four children from Pallet Town

1) Red: Red is who you are in the 1st gen Pokemon games and is the main character of the manga (which I didn't read). He gets one of the 3 starters. Red Battles Giovanni and thwarts Team Rocket's larger schemes. He becomes the Pokemon League Champion. At the end the of 2nd generation games, you can fight him in Mount Silver.

2) Blue/Green/Gary Oak: Blue, known in the Japanese as Green, also known as Gary, is Professor Oak's grandson. He is your rival in the game, as well as a rival to Ash ketchum in the Anime. He gets the starter that is super effective against Red's starter. He becomes the Pokemon League champion but is defeated by Red.

3) Green/Blue : This third trainer appears in the Manga which I have never read, who is called Green in the English and Blue in the Japanese. She gets the third starter Pokemon.

4) Ash Ketchum: Ash is the main character of the Anime. He does not get a starter; rather he gets a Pikachu. Ash never gets involved in Team Rocket's larger schemes, rather he fights two rejects named Jessie and James. Ash never beats the 1st Generation Elite Four.

Pokemon Yellow is Ash
That may be true but it is debatable. While the trainer in Yellow gets a Pikachu who never enters a pokeball much like Ash's Pikachu, and he fights Jessie and James like Ash does, he still battles Giovanni beats the Elite four, something Ash has never done.

Alternative ending. That's the one game that allows us to control Ashes destiny.

Thought this was obvious...

Just look at their teams and you'd realise they're not the same; Ash never evolved his Squirtle or Bulbasaur.

Red in the games is the player from Pokemon Yellow. Red starts with Pikachu (who is his highest levelled pokemon), encounters Snorlax, is given Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur by different trainers, finds Eevee (which in GSC is an Espeon) and is given Lapras by the man in Silph Co (who's in his team in HGSS).

Lol just realised: canonically, Red has only captured one pokemon (Snorlax).

I think I need to watch the Pokemon now since it's not Ash Ketchup(m)
Sorry to dissapoint you, but it's still ash.

OT: Calling red ash is an insult to red. Red solo'ed the entire team rocket, and ash struggles with the worst members of the team. Red beat giovani twice. Red defeated the elite four and became the pokemon master. Ash is a big failure.

No, Yellow is someone else.

3) Unnamed Trainer : It is possible that this third trainer appears in the Manga which I have never read. Either way he gets the third starter Pokemon.

I read the manga. The unnamed trainer is Green. Red's rival is Blue.

Edit: Blue and Green's names are like they're in Japan.
