I'm making this thread to clear an extremely common misconception. There are so many people who believe that when you play Pokemon (1st gen) you are Ash Ketchum, and at the end of the 2nd gen games you fight Ash Ketchum. This is false.
Let's explain it like this. There are Four children from Pallet Town
1) Red: Red is who you are in the 1st gen Pokemon games and is the main character of the manga (which I didn't read). He gets one of the 3 starters. Red Battles Giovanni and thwarts Team Rocket's larger schemes. He becomes the Pokemon League Champion. At the end the of 2nd generation games, you can fight him in Mount Silver.
2) Blue/Green/Gary Oak: Blue, known in the Japanese as Green, also known as Gary, is Professor Oak's grandson. He is your rival in the game, as well as a rival to Ash ketchum in the Anime. He gets the starter that is super effective against Red's starter. He becomes the Pokemon League champion but is defeated by Red.
3) Green/Blue : This third trainer appears in the Manga which I have never read, who is called Green in the English and Blue in the Japanese. She gets the third starter Pokemon.
4) Ash Ketchum: Ash is the main character of the Anime. He does not get a starter; rather he gets a Pikachu. Ash never gets involved in Team Rocket's larger schemes, rather he fights two rejects named Jessie and James. Ash never beats the 1st Generation Elite Four.
