Recommendation?

So I've decided that I'd like to do some creative stuff like making avatars and sigs. I need a recommendation on which software to download.

I know most people use Photoshop, but it's the version of the Photoshop software that I want to know (CS5 or CS6).

I was hoping that I could use the same software that the majority of GFX'ers on the base use, so that it would be easier for me to ask them questions and understand their feedback.

You can use many other applications, search from the net for best answer.

I use photoshop CS6 when doing gifs so i recommend it ^^
