Akira of course.
...I don't know if it fitst your taste on anime, but I really like this one: Otogizoushi
In general terms, Otogi Zoshi revolves around Minamoto no Raikou's search of the magatamas (some rocks with mythical powers). At least that's the summary they always give -and it sounded incredibly dumb for me lol-. What dragged me to watch this anime is the art style. I find it to be very beautiful and somewhat realistic. However Otogi zoshi's value doesn't end there: it takes place on the Heain period, by the decandence times of it -couldn't help but think in Akutagawa's Rashomon-. The devastation in the Heian-kyo is nasty, but the court -more specifically the emperor's ministers- are only scheming all the time, playing their cards in the search of benefit. The strong conspiracy feel is something I could not overlook and made me feel quite hooked. About the main character, is actually quite a heart-warming one, with very plausible motivations for the search of the magatamas, offering an often heart-breaking contrast with the court. The drama Raikou has to endure is very harsh...There's more to it, but I don't want to spoil anything.
The animation is top-notch, with an unique atmosphere in it -some of the bg's look like paintings from the period, which sets the mood of it- and has lots of historical and cultural references.
