Just wanted to ask opinions and what everyone thinks as to why they did so poorly.

My ideas are that most of the hax jutsu that they have would have broken the barrier that Oro's henchmen had up, which wouldn't have been good for Oro. Also I think that he just wanted to demoralize Hiruzen before killing him, so he didn't want to do an insta-kill move.

I know most people will go for the power scaling and Oro not knowing how to control the edo's power moves, but I wanted to see if anybody had any other theories.

1) Controlled by Orochimaru (I don't go with the "he didn't know what he was doing" idea though)

2) Barrier limited the scope of their techniques

3) Hiruzen was a badass

3rd Hokage was strong and Barrier limited the scope of their techniques. Rip Hiruzen

Orochimaru told them to toy with Hiruzen, that's why it seemed like they were gimped, if he had them go all out, Hiruzen would have been killed.

when was it said that they were toying with him the entire battle. I only recall orochimaru say they were toying with him during the bringer of darkness technique.

Because Orochimaru turned both into mindless puppets and used them to toy with Hiruzen.
The result were two braindead meat bags that lost their legs to a crappy explosive tag move.

Main reason is that you keep comparing it to the powers Madara is proving that Hashirama actually had. However, this is in the end of part 2. Kishi has boosted every shinobi by so much since part 1 till now. Just look at Gai. Even Oro had a huge boost in part 2 even though he had his arms sealed and was very sick all the time, he was 10 times stronger than he was when he fought Hiruzen.

If we see a flashback of Hiruzen in his prime in part 2, we will probably see that he is a boss that is above Onokis level. Possibly not on Hashis, but close.

It is because you are comparing them to Edo Madara. Which is not fair. Most of the powers we have seen Madara display he did NOT have when fighting Hashirama. Madara DID NOT have the rinnegan during their battle. In order to understand you MUST compare them to regular EMS Madara.

Hashirama, EMS Madara, Tobirama & Hiruzen are all on a similar level. But I wouldn't say equal. Given the fact Oro was controlling them and had limited experience using their techniques this put Hiruzen at an advantage. In his prime I'm sure he could have managed much better but given his old age he was forced to use the Death Reaper, and he even struggled at that.

Still, Even with them being puppets, You have to hand it to Hiruzen for taking on Hashi & Tobi & Oro together. Handicap or not that CLEARLY places him in Hashi/Tobi/Madara's relative level.
