Originally, every character wore a mask when Kishi first visualised the series, but decided against it because he wouldn't be able to express their emotions very well through masks. He decided to keep Kakashi's just because, and that definitely turned out to be one of the best choices he possibly could've made.
There's no real in-story reason for Kakashi wearing a mask, just like there's no real reason for Yamato to wear that full-face headband or for Sasuke to wear Orochimaru's giant purple butt-bow. It's just character design.

Well there is also the simple reason that Kakashi wears a mask due to Kishimoto designing his character that way. It doesn't have to be any particular reason concerning his actual history. It's more of an appearance thing to give Kakashi more of the actual Ninja look. When he was created in the beginning of the series he pretty much embodied a really swift, precise ninja.
