Naruto is yearning for love and affection.
Naruto have lived throughout his life, alone, no parents to instruct him, void, an empty vessel.
Naruto is striving to be the Hokage, expecting the adoration of his peers, for he truly desire love.

Can you live like Naruto for about 13 years of your life?
When everyone is expecting you to get lost every single day they see you?

Naruto has been through a lot, maybe that's why he acts goofy, moronic, and hasty at times.
For psychologically he snapped at a time we have not known of. The grin Naruto wears is a grin, is a grin forced by a broken heart throughout his childhood, loneliness is tough, 13 to 14 years without anyone acknowledging you as a human being can truly leave a mark. Naruto endured and endured, crying those nights out, till the morning shines on him, Naruto grinning to show Konoha, that he is able, able to be human. Laugh, Live, and have friends also.

So do not be cruel to people, smile and i'll smile back.
