What makes Amaterasu strong is it's versatility, Sasuke was using his Sharingan like an amateur in those times unlike Itachi. But what you failed to realize is it's the perfect distraction as well as the perfect defence.

Furthermore, Amaterasu is used to its full potential when Enton is applied, someone with Sasuke's speed would hit any target he likes using an Enton sword. And now that he has Rikudou chakra Onmyoudon wouldn't work against them.

I'd go as far as to say intelligence is less useful than good reflexes in the case of amaterasu. Most of those instances ended due to good reflexes. Knowing what to do won't help as much if you can't react properly.
