Quick question on eighth gate

So when gai used the evening elephant attack on madara how did he learn that move and how did he master fighting using the eighth gate if no one ever lives after it?

His dad taught him how to unlock it and the techniques used to complete it; Remember, even Rock Lee recognized the Jutsu himself, meaning, it is something that they would have learned beforehand.
