I have two legitimate questions. Not bashing in anyway.

I just feel like I over-looked over something in the manga and am confused to why I've seen people say Minato was a Sage and what not.

So, 1. Is there anywhere in the manga that says or hinted at Minato possibly being a Sage? Or are people assuming?

And, 2. Was Minato actually able to use the Toad Summons like Jiraiya and Naruto? I just don't remember seeing it if he could or not.

That is all.

One, when Naruto is training with the toads, fukkusaku states that he trained j-man and the 4th, and that he only takes on ninja with extraordinary chakra reserves.

2, he had a contract with the toads, which is why he was indeed able to summon toads. This leads us to believe that he was a sage

Answer 1) Yes it has been hinted at once or twice that Minato was a sage. However since people like to hate on Minato, it will never be accepted that he is one.

Answer 2) I believe it shows it in the first chapter, and it later shows it again during the chapters where Minato fights Tobi and then the 9-tails. He summons; Gamabunta followed by Gerotora (or whatever that Toad scroll's name is).

Minato is legendary Shinobi, but still, only ones on top can become Sages. Minato was prodigy, and he was able to learn seals on great level.
And about toads, as was said on Narutopedia in his section, Jiraiya himself taught Minato, how to use that.

So Fu said he trained Jiraiya and the 4th? That's definitely a hint.
I know, that's good hint (btw. dont you know manga chapter where he said that?).
But still, that needs chakra on great level. I think it's possible that he was Sage, and I'd like he was. But still, there was only greatest Shinobies able to besome Sages. (I dont say Minato wasn't, of course)

The evidence is this.

If you check the scroll that Jiraiya has that has the names of all the toad summoners, it has Jiraiya's name, then Minato's, then Naruto's.

Jiraiya was the first person in Konoha to summon a toad, in one chapter it shows Jiraiya after he has ran away from the village and he somehow finds his way to Mt. Myobokuzan (I can't remember which chapter I assume it is around Jiraiya's death) .

So anyway there are only 3 toad summoners in the manga, (not including the possibility of the SO6P) so when Fukasaku says that Naruto has surpassed those before him, when talking about Sage Mode, that leaves only Jiraiya and Minato as toad summoners.

Also Jiraiya said in Part 1 that Minato was a better toad summoner than he was, which again implies Sage Mode.

Everything is there for him to acquire Sage Mode, he has large chakra reserves, he is very calm (to be still and part of nature), and he is the best toad summoner (according to Jiraiya, because I don't think that Naruto is the best toad summoner, maybe has the best Sage Mode, but he is not very good with utilizing the toads).

  1. No, Minato was not a Sage. There is no reference of him ever using Sage Mode. In fact, Fukasaku clearly explains to Naruto that only those who have massive chakra supplies, like him and Jiraiya, are even qualified to learn Sage Mode. It's because it's required to balance the enormity of the natural energy you're gathering. I'm a bit lazy to go digging for pages so don't ask me for it. There is nothing that suggests that Minato had a chakra supply comparable to Naruto and Jiraiya. They had monstrous supplies like that of Kisame.

  2. Yes, Minato could summon toads. He summoned Gamabunta when he went to save Konoha from the Kyuubi. He was on top of him when he appeared:

^^this..To all those who can't see the possibility, those are the guys that only believes that everything in Naruto is a plot hole like those who can't defend why Tobi was not able to use genjutsu on Minato. There are hints in the manga that leads us to believe that it is possible that Minato learned sage mode. Hints are always present in every story.

All that scroll demonstrates is that Minato can summon a toad. That's it. That scroll serves only one purpose: a contract to summon toads. Nothing to do with Sage Mode.

You don't need Sage Mode to be a good summoner. You just need a lot of chakra and to be able to use it effectively.

I don't think Fukasaku was referring to Naruto's mastery of Sage Mode specifically. I assume you're talking about when Naruto, Fukasaku, Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Hiro arrive at Konoha after it's destruction? I think he was talking Naruto's growth in general - surpassing both Minato and Jiraiya

As for Minato's ability to summon toads better than Jiraiya, the Summoning Technique doesn't involve natural energy in anyway so I don't see how this qualifies as a hint that he knew Sage Mode. It's actually a rudimentary form of the Space-Time technique. That said, I'd say Minato's excellence in summoning toads would be attributed to his mastery of Space-Time techniques and Sealing techniques more than anything else.

I agree with the bolded part wholeheartedly.

As to your first paragraph I have to disagree with you there, as one of the toads says "Do you see those old familiar forms gramps?" (gramps might be the wrong word but the rest is a direct quote).

In my opinion the only thing that he could be referencing there is Sage Mode.

But again all this is just speculation and will always remain so because it hasn't come outright and said/shown Minato using it. I attribute this to all the battles we have seen him in being ambushes by the enemy.

No one knows if he was sage or not, there's no evidence saying neither if he's sage or not.
"Minato was one of the few people that Gamabunta would willingly cooperate with." So, yes he could toy with toads.

Its funny, at any moment while alive he didn't need to use Sage mode (if he was a sage and from what we've seen from him) bcuz there was no situation that would force him to do so.
