question on timezones

ok, so me and another member are kind of at a stalemate with something. see, he claims since he is in a different timezone than me, time is different for him, so 3 days passed for me but not him 3 for him.

however, this makes no sense to me. we both exist at the same time, so even if we're in different timezones, wont time go on the same? if its 3 for me, it'll be 3 for him too, right?

No. Ok for example, I'm in the US and my brother is in Iraq right now. He's 8 hours ahead of me. So it can be Tuesday here but it'll be Wed there. Depending where in the world you are you can be ahead or behind a few days from other people.

ok i get this. its Tues for you. 3 days go by, now its Fri. but 3 would go for him too, now its Sat for him. even if its Tues at midnight for you and Wed at six in the morning for him, it was 3 for both of you, now its Fri at midnight for u and Sat at six am for him

Timezones are very hard to understand, but look into GMT times, that helps you alot.

well his a true fact about time zones and its a bit wacky i warn you now:

if you travel from Paris to UK , you will arrive in UK at the exact same time and day that you departed from Paris !

I think i understand what you're trying to say, and i agree because even though your 3 hours apart 3 days is 72hours....so 72 hours passed on both of you its doesn't matter if the time itself is different...I think i explained that good.:shrug:

Look at the earth and split it into two at every 15 degrees. Each time you move the Earth 15 degrees(backwards or forwards) an extra hour is added or substracted from your initial timezone.

I think that's a bit confusing, so I'll try to give an example:

I live in Romania, my timezone is GMT +3, however Hungary is at about 15 degrees on the Earth from my country(negative[that means "backwards"]), thus it's timezone is GMT +2.

It's all about the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. You can't just assume it's sunny in the entire world at the same time.

That's all I learnt in Geography and I hope I am correct. :| Hope it helped in any way.

Well 3 days pass in both timezones, regardless of the hour difference. Time doesn't stack anywhere. O_O If that was your question, then I think.. it would have been.. logical?
