When Danzo ordered the Uchiha massacre, notice that he was also very heavily interested in shutting down the Akatsuki. Danzo had caught word of the Akatsuki gathering the Tailed Beasts. In response, his final mission for Itachi, after killing his clansmen, was to infiltrate the Akatsuki as a spy. We know these things already due to the Kakashi-Anbu filler.
Let's put 2 & 2 together. Itachi was sent to gain information on the Moon Eye Plan. So just how much did he discover? He had to have had knowledge on the IT, Juubi and maybe even Kaguya, as he read from the Uchiha tablet as well. He also had Kisame keeping tabs on Obito. So did he know about Madara's plan for revival too? How much do you think he actually knew?

Itachi knew Jiraiya's weakness was women & knew how long it would take Jiraiya to realize the genjutsu & save Naruto from Kisame.

Itachi used reverse psychology on Sasuke to get him to "protect" the Leaf.
Itachi used Izanami to get Kabuto to come back & "protect" Sasuke .
Used his confrontations with Kakashi & Sasuke to influence them to work on their MS & sharingan development.

Despite joining the Akatsuki on the Hokage's order to be a spy, we have not once seen him report to Hiruzen, or any other Kage after him.
His only goal was to spy on the Akatsuki and give the Leaf info on them, yet he seemed to do everything so casually for them.

There was a panel where Obito said something along the lines of ''Good thing Itachi doesn't know everything about me, otherwise I would be dead''.
So, it is safe for me to assume that Itachi was still against the Akatsuki, but he didn't have much information on Obito and such.
Itachi never progressed farther than the MS, so he most likely doesn't know about Kaguya, he could've possibly known about the Moon's Eye Plan.

He most likely also believed in Obito being Madara, just like pretty much everyone did, so chances are that he didn't know that Nagato was being used as a pawn to revive the real Madara.

But, considering that when Itachi and Nagato were revived and were together, Itachi could've known about the Moon's eye and possibly about the revival of Madara.

TLDR: Itachi is a genius and that's all there is to it.

On the topic of what Obito said, I know what you're speaking of. I took that to mean that if Itachi had realized Obito wasn't really Madara, he'd have killed him. I think Itachi also had an alterior motive. It's true that we don't see him reporting to anybody about his findings. Maybe he knew of the Obito Madara and went to finish the Uchiha Massacre, intending to kill Madara. I think if he had lived a bit longer, we'd have seen an Obito-Itachi battle.

considering itachi is repeatedly shown to be stupid, it makes sense that he did nothing and found out nothing while in akatsuki

Itachi found a mysterious Uchiha outside of the village claiming he is Madara and he couldnt put 2 and 2 together to deduce that he was the one who framed the Uchiha,he proceeded like a retard with the massacre.He thought it was smart to flat out tell Sasuke how he can gain MS,what if Sasuke's best friend was a poor guy from the academy and not the Kyuubi Jin.
