So I've just discovered that the U.S. use debit cards for food/money as far as social welfare is concerned... my question to you is, do you think it works?

Hell no. This is a systematic bubble that's just waiting to pop. Most debit cards can be easily hacked and since they are tied into a bank account your savings are out at risk. The economic system of money and social welfare has mainly done nothing more than drive a divide amongst the populous by creating the Haves and Have Nots.

It will ultimately implode.

You mean EBT? It works because money is transferred directly to the card. However, you can only buy cold food. Not something like fast-food or Chinese. The other good thing is there is no tax for the items you buy.

The problem that is arising recently is the change in the program. Most people who are on Welfare are unemployed, thus, they have to mandatory participant in a "job" selected by Welfare, where they are not being paid. Those who have jobs are seeing their welfare cut or "gutted" because the government is cutting spending and aiming to move everyone off welfare.

It works because people are only supposed to access the services until they get back on their feet. However, most take advantage of the system and go as far as the scam it. So it's not working. But the government has been cracking down on it.

I'm in the UK and not on any kind of benefits; just curious for research purposes.

I mean in uk.
We used to have the card. I think for unemployment and food. Told my dad to attend things and fill out a job searching log.
I've seen on the news ppl try to exchange food stamps for cash illegally in the ghetto lol.

Ohhhhh, I see. The system here is whack; people get money paid directly into their bank account. So many don't even bother trying to look for work just because of how easy it is, and many squander the money on booze, tattoos or drugs.

That's why this EBT caught my eye.

The card system isn't really airtight, as people said before; people will trade them or use them for others, whatever. It's not hyper-regulated (You can get by without ID in some cases, for example) and the regulation that does exist is easy enough to circumvent. That said, there's not all the much to regulate anyway.

The system doesn't really provide all that much and the rules, which are sometimes extensive, aren't legible to everyone, thus both incentivizing and also failing to regulate so-called "abuses" of the system (which are really people just disobeying the rules, nobody's balling offa food stamps). It "works" in the sense that it's better than nothing and still creates a cushion wherein families with unemployed earners can still manage to do important things like send their kids to school and whatnot. I know a few students who were surprised when they found out their families had been on food stamps or other welfare even while their parents had managed to send them to college.

So America's push to gut welfare system is really just based on the idea that rule-breaking in and of itself is bad. In reality, the rules aren't really doing all that much to benefit anyone anyway. Efforts to gut America's welfare system are absurd. Gut what?

America's welfare system is largely responsible for the poverty trap situation we have today.

Yea you can only buy food here with EBT. Though many people will sell 100 dollars EBT for 50 dollars cash.
