It has its moments. Characters are likeable.

You'll end up hungry most episodes. I rate it a 6/10. Lost interest in it at episode 13.

is it a good anime to watch?

What would you rate it, and can you compare
it to a other anime?
do not watch toriko

toei has destroyed this series with their animation, censored the entire show, and changed the story lines

read the manga!!!! Way better than most action anime. Do not watch, only read!!

Yes Toriko anime is good to watch, but I advice you to change to manga once you finish watching Starjun and Toriko fight because after that its plain crap. Also make sure you're full before you watch teh show

Dbz rip off, it really suck in my opinion just like HxH, dont waste your time.
l0l still butthurt <3

OT: Don't watch the anime, it's butuchered. If you don't believe, watch KOL's rant:
Watch from 2:47-4:10 because there's some spoilers in the video

Not only is it censored to sh*t but they messed up the canon material. Just stick to the manga 100%. I'd give the manga a 9.2/10 or maybe even 9.4/10.

Explain to me why the manga is so good please.
- Fights (some of the best fights I've seen)
- World Building (best world building as of right now)
- Characters are written well (there's not one single character that I hate or I think is written poorly)
- Character development & even designs.
- Adult protagonist, which is something different than the generic teenager protagonist in the popular shonen titles.
- Art (panels are drawn nicely and detailed)

And much more...

That's interesting because most of that contradicts what I've read of Toriko so far.

The fights seem pretty standard with whacky, OTT and goofy abilities.
World Building seems to be pretty on the fly, nothing that makes me think that the author has really thought things through to create a rich world and lore.
Characters seem to follow a pretty standard Shounen formulae.
Character Development seems to also follow a pretty standard formulae and the character designs don't really seem special.
And the art, while detailed looks a bit messy and excessive. (Although the scan quality is pretty poor.)

Albeit I've only read like the first 40 or so chapters, but in all honesty I'm finding it difficult to will myself to read further, and I don't really get all the Toriko hype that's being thrown around on NB.

Also, if you think it has the best World Building then you clearly haven't read Kubera.

You Forgot One Very Important Thing dude,
That this manga is pretty much about body building.

Well you've only read the first 40 chapters of the series? The first chapters have terrible scans online. The fights are awesome.

Lol, the first 40 chapters take place in the human world which is insignificant in comparison to the gourmet world. The GW is where the world building really starts to kick in and it's amazing. Even the human world has pretty good world building & environments to it.

Characters seem to follow a pretty standard Shounen formulae.
Character Development seems to also follow a pretty standard formulae and the character designs don't really seem special.
Not necessarily, but let's assume you're correct to save us time. How does that add up to poor writing? The characters may have shonen traits to them but they are unique at the end of the day. As for character development, you have no idea what you're talking about.

The earlier chapter scans aren't that great in quality. Read the series for yourself. I don't understand the TG/AOT hype either. The art is pretty good, check out the latest scans.

How many worlds are there exactly?

It doesn't necessarily add up to poor writing, but it doesn't exactly equate to good or interesting writing now does it?

I've tried reading it myself, but that's not really an easy thing to do when the series doesn't get you from the get go, and when you're not even sure if reading through will pay off with something worthwhile in the long run. Hence why I'm asking you these questions

The TG/AOT hype is pretty easy to understand...it's gory and they can be somewhat hardnox. It's somewhat of a change from the usual happy-go-lucky Shounen stuff, and some parts can be kinda deep due to the internal conflict that can be quite interesting to watch/read.

lol...wanna expand on that?

Just 2, human world and gourmet world.

It seemed like you were concluding that it adds up to poor writing since you said most of what I said contradicts with what you're read.

Read a few more chapters and see how it goes. Personally I'd read it up to century soup (Ice Hell) arc because that's where the good fights are evident & world-building but even the fights/world-building in that arc doesn't even compare to the best.

Same can be said about Toriko. Toriko does have a lot of gore, probably not to the degree of AOT but still a lot for a shonen.

BTW, think of it like this. If I read the first 40 chapters of HxH, would me saying that fights aren't interesting/entertaining be correct? No. The Meruem vs Netero fight (best fight in the HxH series) took place around chapter 290-ish and the best fight in Toriko (as good if not better than the fight between Meruem vs Netero, takes place around chapter 240-250ish). In that arc, there are actually 2 fights that occur in that arc and are seen as the best fights that the series has to offer as of yet.

well here's the thing.....

Toriko is an amazing "series" but anime? that's another story. Toriko anime is probably in the top 10 worst anime I've ever seen in my life. I'm not even kidding and I've seen dozens of anime in my life. I'd rank the anime at like a 4/10 and rank the manga at 9.3/10...Now you may be asking "how do you rate a manga so high but rate it's anime adoption so low"? well reason being is that the Toriko manga is butchered to hell, it's a shell of the glorious manga, it's like comparing a candle to the sun, the difference is as great as gods to ants Lol and mind you, Toriko is my 2nd favorite ongoing manga at the moment and it was my favorite manga of 2013. The Cooking Festival arc in Toriko was one of the best arcs in shounen period and my favorite arc of 2013..

here's what makes the anime not as good as it should be.

1. The censoring: Toriko manga has very violent fight scenes. I'm talking about people getting eaten alive, people getting holes punched in their torsos, limbs getting tore off in fights, after the typical toriko fight there's someone covered in blood and missing limbs. Now how does the anime handle this? They completely censor all the blood, important scenes for the plot where characters lose limbs the anime doesn't even show it. They could at least but black censor bars over shit but they just cut blood out all together; instead of blood they have characters sweating hard :| smh...

2. The animation: now I know this isn't really that big deal of a deal but the animation is half assed most of the time. Even during important fights where you'd think they'd up the animation but no.

3. THEY COMPLETELY CHANGED OR SKIPPED OVER SOME IMPORTANT POINTS IN THE STORY/FIGHTS: This is the biggest gripe I have with the anime. Image if the naruto vs sasuke II fight gets changed for the anime and they have naruto turning into a purple weird vampire thing with rainbow hair, well yea some shiiit like that happened in the toriko anime. They turned my fav arc of 2013 into a nightmare to watch. Skipping over important scenes that develops the plot and expand the story.

4. The anime got cancelled: Do I need to say anything else? Lol

All in all you should read the manga and avoid the anime. Don't get me wrong they anime has some decent moments in it like the ice hell arc and the gourmet pyramid arc but overall it's just a disgrace of the manga. If you do plan on watching the anime then i'd suggest you read the manga first and then go back to see certain scenes animated. This way your first impression of Toriko won't be ruined by the standards of the anime.
