Being that this chapter it shows clearly that Madara awakened the Rinnegan when he was very old, does it now make it plausible that he actually did physically give Nagato his eyes?

Thats always been a weird part of the story to me because of time

Also this chapter seems to say also that the rinnegan is strictly for those who possess both of his sons chakra, there is the question of how Nagato "awaken" the Rinnegan?...

It was already clear for a long time that he awakened it when he was at the point of dying of old age.

Nagato didn't awaken the rinnegan, just like obito didn't awaken the rinnegan.. madara did.

Zetsu stated that it was Madara who gave Nagato his eyes when Obito first encountered Nagato. Madara did the transplant himself after awakening Rinnegan and summoning the Gedo Mazo in his lair.

When Nagato's parents were attacked by those 2 spies, this is where we see Nagato's "normal eyes":
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images

This shows Nagato awakening his Rinnegan.

Assuming that Madara or Zetsu did transplant into Nagato, it would likely contradict the last 4 images because if Nagato had a transplanted Rinnegan, it should already be active. Also, even if Kishi changed the idea that Nagato wasn't a reincarnated Rikudou but a kid with transplanted Rinnegan, the images seem to contradict that claim.

I was wrong with those pictures. Still, there's this:
You must be registered for see images

9tailsJinchuuriki mentions:
Some say that he didn't awaken it because he can't deactivate it. The byakugan can't deactivate and we don't know if the sage could deactive his rinnegan, so that isn't a factor.

It might or might not be possible to be activate it because we saw the episode when we saw pain( tendo) controlled by nagato in the reunion for the extraction of ichibi from gaara, his eyes didn't look like rinnengan but it was blue or yellowish or orange but it was not a dojutsu but just a normal eye
Plus, when we first learn about the Rinnegan in ch. 373 (when Nagato killed the Hidden Stone Jounin), Jiraiya sees Nagato's Rinnegan for the 1st time. Though Nagato's hair often covered his eyes, I think Jiraiya would've seen Nagato's eyes on occasion (like "Nagato, pull your back so you can see your food"). Also, you'd think since his dad those weird eyes, he may have inherited it.
