Question about Shounen

Is it a requirment for the MC to be the silly, playful character? I probably have not seen any MC's who take the serious archetype in the Shounen category

Like HunterxHunter, Naruto, DBZ, etc.,
Hell even that new Black Clover rip off of Naruto that came out too. Is that what they need? Or is that just a reoccurring theme that will never die away?

It's because the top shonen protagonists are made to be similar to goku in someway as if he is some template. I guess DBZ defined shonen manga

Still even among these some are way better than others imo eg Gon>>>>>>>Naruto

Ichigo is one character that isn't like you described

Not all, Shounen is a fairly wide genre.

Yusuke from YYH. His personality is not at all like Naruto, Goku, or Gon.

InuYasha isn't really like Naruto or them, but he isn't a genius, either.

Maka/Soul from Soul Eater aren't that archetypal.

Vash from Trigun is kind of different.

So, are most shounen MCs archetypal? Sure. Are all? Definitely not.

OT:- Try JJBA(JoJo's Bizarre Adventures), YYH, Gintama, read HxH, Law of Ueki, Gash, Slam Dunk, Initial D etc etc. Move away from entry level stuff dude.

Also Shonen isn't a genre but a demographic dude.

Luffy is silly but he is pretty selfish which fits him being a pirate.
Toriko is far from being silly/playful, he's serious lol.
Gon isn't silly either
Ging (current main character in the HxH arc ) is intelligent/badass and his IQ greatly exceeds any of the MC's of popular/mainstream shonen's.

Yu Yu Hakusho has a unique MC. He is far from being the type you mentioned that we see in plenty mangas.
As others said Toriko is different as well and idk where you got that from, but Gon is definitely not a silly MC.


Imo the best MC's are from YYH, FMA and Gintama. You should checkt it out and see.
