It is overall stronger imo but hawk provided a different ability snake can not (flying); but nothing more than that.

Well that depends on what you define 'level' with, as both of his shown summons (that are still alive) are used for different purposes. While the snake will presumably like he said mow down into the hordes of enemies, the hawk was used for highly increased mobility and a coordinated strike as shown in the anime. So I wouldn´t really give them a level, as they merely serve a purpose defined by Sasuke's current need.

I would have prefered if sasuke stayed with the hawk summon, we only saw it once. Kishi just made him summon a snake so that team 7 would resemble the three legendary sannins.

I did a little research in Sasuke's moves, and almost all of his moves are named after Japanese Gods/myths.
With this in mind, I searched for some bird Gods in Japanese myths, and found a one that was named "Konoha Tengu", which is a japanese hawk god that lives in the woods.

With him saying he's not "hebi", but "taka" now, this snake summon seems a bit random now.

Well, the situation called for a snake not a hawk, I don't believe Sasuke is reverting back to the snakes this chapter, I still positively believe that hawks are his main summoning at this point. It'd be regression so, I don't see him abandoning his hawks in favor of snakes.

Also, I speculate after seeing how much Kichi has grown since the Pain arc, I wonder if Sasuke's hawk might have grown as well. They were around the same size in regards to Naruto and Sasuke, last they were seen and I'm pretty sure that is Gamakichi that he summoned this chapter. I don't believe the snake would be willing to obey Sasuke at this point either, he did cause Manda's death, so it's possible that Sasuke might use the threat of his hawk to force him into cooperation. It's purely speculation but I'd find it pretty cool. His most powerful summon needs to remain a hawk imo.

Now what I don't understand that Hawk by manga logic - and even real life - preys upon snakes. Sasuke himself mentioned something along these lines: "The fate of the snake is in the talons of the hawk". Now why bring out something inferior? I suppose because Sai mentioned that air attacks are dangerous.

Eer I know that (what would make you think I didn't and how does it change anything regarding what I said? SMH), I was just giving a counterexample to show how what characters say may or may not matter.

Aerial combat, evading Danzo's attacks, I wouldn't say nothing, and I think he summoned the snake because of the whole sliding past and getting through the ten tail clones, the aerial moves he uses would leave him wide open. That snake must be up there, but probably wouldn't need any sacrifices like Manda did, does seem like the same size, maybe a bit smaller though.
