Question about Sage Mode

If Sage Mode requires the gathering of natural energy, then what determines the animalistic traits?

If Natural energy is the same everywhere, then why does Naruto possess Toad Sage while Hashirama has another in the same area where they gather the natural energy?


What do they actually learn that makes them get the specific attributes?

and if there are different Natural energies to be absorbed, what would happen if you absorbed all the different ones at once?

Yeah I can see this. Since Kabuto trained with the snakes that probably had something similar to the Toad Oil giving him his reptilian features.

I think it has to do with what i call animal affinity, i mean each ninja is associated with one animal naturally, an example is those people that make use of cursed mark senjutsu chakra, they display animal traits in this mode, some like kidomaro (spider) ,sasuke( hawk, at that time he had no contract with a summoning).....
Some traits come from kekkie genkie, such as kimmimaro ( bones ) hashirama ( not sure wood)
and the common; blood contract with an animal (summoning)..such as naruto, jiraiya, kabuto

Their summoning contracts. Each SM is different. Due to the characteristics of the contract animal you signed with, your imperfect SM will be affected by either having horns and scales [DSM] or warts and webbed feet/hands [TSM].

While I agree with your theory.....I believe the Uchiha animal Deity is a cat. Remeber where Sasuke went before fighting Itachi? Even though he has nevered summoned a ninja cat....actually I don't think any Uchiha did for that matter....Why didn't Kishi make it a hawk?....XD

Naruto is only affected in the eyes, whereas Jiraiya is like a toad. And correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't it seem as if the markings on his eyes are decreasing?

i think the sharp reflexes of a cat represent the sharingan precog and thier great reflex, something to do with the sharingan sort of

The contract with their related summons , but this doesn't mean , that if you have a contract you will gain or be able to have SM , Hashi is the perfect example , he doesn't have any summons & has SM , which has to do with his body & being able to sustain such power .

There are different types of sage mode taught by different kinds of sages. As for what actually makes them different we have yet to find that out, perhaps there are different kinda of nature chakra or different ways to absorb it. We wont know unless we get an explanation. Maybe if we ever find out what Shikkotsu forest is well find out then.

It's from the place they trained where naruto was given the toad oil. This allows him to feel a particular natural energy and be able to absorb it. Naruto isn't trained to absorb other natural energies, so he cannot have dragon sage mode. Kabuto was trained to absorb dark or powerful energy from nature. Depending on what type of energy they absorb and for how long, they will bear the characteristics in their body.

E.g: Hashirama probably absorbs natural energy only from trees, resulting in his sage mode.

Nothing to do with summoning contracts. The toads only teach how to gather natural energy related to them. That's why Naruto gets toad sage mode.

Kabuto did perfect it, according to him. Kabuto only gains horns(which has todo with being a dragon),snake pupils and markings. (each to be expected)

There is no proof that I know of that says the characteristics comes from summoning contract. My guess would be the teacher, considering there are only 3 places to learn from and 1 teacher is a toad and the other is a snake. Juugo's clan are able to use senjutsu naturally and they gain a demon look. Hashirama could have very well learned it on his own. I would like to see Gai or Lee with SM their Taijutsu would be out of this world
