The only reason it took so long was to draw out the fight because its the only real fight we ever see jiraiya in. Also, I don't think kishi had the details of sage mode worked out yet

I guess it was plot since Shima was able to summon naruto,Fukasaku and those other 3 toads instantly.

Naruto can't go straight into sage mode unless he already has a clone that's collected enough chakra.
It take jariya some time for the same reason to go into sage mode you have to collect nature energy and balance it with your chakra.
Why do you think naruto carries a big scroll? Cause its a seal that calls the naruto clones that have collected nature energy.

The time it took Jiraiya to gather was relative to the fight. It took him no longer to gather energy from the toads then it would take Naruto to gather the natural energy. Remember though, Naruto was a prodigy among The Sages. He mastered it much faster than even Jiraiya and is able to enter perfect Sage Mode.

Remember though, Naruto was a prodigy among The Sages. He mastered it much faster than even Jiraiya and is able to enter perfect Sage Mode.

I'm more so talking about Jiraiya having to hold his hands together for a good amount of time to summon the sage toads while Shima summoned naruto and the toad army in a instant.

The only answer is going to be he was gathering chakra.
Or it's cause ma and pa can't join with naruto cause of Kurama but they can with jariya so that might be why. He needs more concentration so ma and pa can join with him
