what is the difference between l' and le?

i was taking an (online) test and it said that the correct form is le garçon while l'garçon is incorrect.

Since I know English and some other languages I thought that l' was the contraction of le (like we'll is the contraction of we will).

What am I getting wrong here?

The vowels.

I think there is an extra vowel in french though, im not too sure, my french is pretty weak.

They both mean 'the' but l' is used infront of nouns that begin with a vowel
le is used for masculine nouns

ex. l'ecole
le poisson
