The purpose of the Hyuuga Main Branch seal has been something of an oddity to me for some time, now.

"That's just the Hyuuga being authoritarian pricks, Aim."

Well - possibly, but I am beginning to suspect a much deeper plot to the Hyuuga.

What, you know, with Kaguya being a space alien and having the Byakugan. Then there is the fact that the Hyuuga are not once observed using ninjutsu. Ever. Not once.

Granted, they don't have a whole lot of panel time - but you would think a substitution would be a great way to get the drop on an enemy in close combat. Substitute and counter with 64 palms. Who cares how powerful the guy is if his first attack was null and he doesn't get a second because his chakra is shut down?

The tactical advantages of ninjutsu for the Hyuuga is obscene. Further - their eyes should grant exceptional insight into -all- ninjutsu, even those that do not involve hand signs (Rasengan, for example). One would think the Hyuuga would be master artisans of ninjutsu.

So... why stick to the very narrow application of the gentle fist and air palm?

There's a lot more to what is going on, here - and I highly suspect the seal is more than a simple means of oppression by the Main Branch.

Let us first consider the origin of the Hyuuga. Our main link with this is the Byakugan. The supreme badass of all history, Kaguya, apparently had the Byakugan - and it has been indicated that there are more of people like Kaguya out there.

Obviously, the last time Kaguya tried all of this, things went pear-shaped - or she wouldn't have been absent from the picture. Someone(s) rained on her parade.

Coincidentally, there are a bunch of people with the Byakugan who seem insistent on not using ninjutsu. Either they can't, or they are quite dedicated to avoiding the temptation of pursuing the obvious -power- ninjutsu has to offer.

So, recap on where we are at so far:

Byakugan-wielding Kaguya is the supreme badass of Naruverse history. Powers and abilities decidedly pre-ninjutsu, though extent of which somewhat vague because chakra in the naruverse isn't like traditional ideas of energy... Pre-fruit Kaguya may have been simply jonin level in a world full of normal people (which would still make her like a god).

Despite being supreme badass and all - previous plans did not pan out. Someone out-badassed the badass.

Kaguya is stated to have been using humanity to create soldiers to fight against... probably whatever/whoever out-badassed her.

The Byakugan-wielding Hyuuga avidly avoid using ninjutsu - either through lack of ability or fanaticism.

The most probable conclusion I can arrive at is that Kaguya expected a contingent of her people to show up and kick the snot out of her - probably for having Hagoromo and Hamura (she was probably supposed to eat the fruit and leave, as sticking around would cause the juubi to go nuts trying to get it back). Because humans were always fighting each other - she decided uniting their warrish ways to resist her people was a good idea.

Going out on a pun of a limb - the shamans who originally worshiped and tended to the Tree were likely very upset and against this idea. These were likely the founders of the animal sage modes and progenitors of the Uzumaki. Using the Holy Tree for such purposes would probably piss them right the hell off - and I imagine they resisted.

This is where perhaps Kaguya didn't use Infinite Tsukuyomi before - if humans didn't have chakra, it is unlikely IT would have been necessary. Kaguya simply could have brought forth the tree to brain-drain everyone. Regardless, there exist weaknesses in Infinite Tsukuyomi (Stay Calm and Itachi) - likely that it isn't actually infinite once people start really feeling the unnaturalness of their environment (humans require cycles of disappointment and suffering).

Though that does introduce the question of: "If the will of Kaguya persisted for so long... is the will of those 'drained' to become Zetsu also persisting somewhere?"

But I digress. So, Kaguya got her butt handed to her by a likely alliance of the "Earth's" Uzumaki and the Sky-People's Ototsuki warriors. For reasons yet to be explained - she persisted, the "Juubi problem" existed, and Hagoromo thought it would be a good idea to give everyone chakra (probably because he played a part in making sure Kaguya was not destroyed - but that's because I believe Hagoromo is a 'heretical sage of the outer path').

Anyone powerful and/or wise enough to accomplish this would have likely realized that the problem was far from over and that there would be a time when Kaguya came back to cause problems (or someone doing her bidding). Perhaps their space ship got blown up, too.

Or, perhaps the Holy Tree is a space ship...

... crashed space ships and aliens in anime seem so far fetched, now? Worked out great, actually - couldn't make enough variations of the story. Thought it could also be all of the cute girls... though Lucas would argue it was the light-sabers.

Anyway -

So, the Hyuuga likely draw their origins from these Ototsuki Warriors, some (or all) of whom remained behind to stand watch over Kaguya's 'grave.'

The alliance with the tree shaman likely made this possible. The Seal was likely developed as a means of keeping the broader population of Hyuuga (that would eventually come in the wake of settlement) from being able to seek broader power as Kaguya did. The true "Power of the Main Branch" likely does not sit with the Gentle Fist style, but with abilities similar to (though probably not the magnitude) of Kaguya. Though it's possible those abilities have been forgotten simply out of adherence to a strict doctrine of not utilizing them.

The true purpose of the "Caged Bird Seal" is to prevent the rise of another Kaguya, and quite possibly to seal off branch members from greater abilities (perhaps to include ninjutsu).

Well, that was a good read as usual. I do think Kaguya was an alien. I think she is not human and is of another species, a species of people that live on the moon. Her horns and Byakugan are most likely anatomical traits of her species as well. I think she came down to earth because something went wrong on the moon and she wanted to make an army to do something about that. Or whatever it is

Even though I really dislike the idea of more aliens being among the population of NV, it is a good theory and I really like the idea of Hyugas being much more powerful than they let themselves be.

Interesting theory, you've don't good job explaining with the the Main and Branch family and the purpose of the death seal as you've explained is to prevent from falling to Kaguya. Neji death represent his freedom and I like this symbolism. I''v always suspected that the the Hyuga never utilize the ninjutsu concept which ties in with the Moon People and Byakugan is the celestial dojutsu.

+ Rep for you, I always enjoyed reading your theories. :)

Most likely the seal was base on an Uzumaki prison seal to control prisoners when they misbehaved applied originally to the Hyuga main warrior force to prevent the enemies from getting the Byakugan and like most things got out of hand when several Hyuga leaders use it to make their warriors into docile slaves to pamper themselves. That a possibility base on the Human condition that we still suffer today to some degree like when some people think their better than the rest and use their position to Lord it over us.

This was the most plausible thing in your whole theory, very nice read though!

funny thing is, i was just thinking the other day, " why don't the hyuuga use ninjutsu?" funny that you would bring this up not long after i thought about it. i mean technically, the thing that hinata does with the tigers on her fist are ninjutsu/taijutsu but still i get it. they never use anything with handsigns or elements or the like. the simply use things that basically eject chakra from their body.

i am a firm believer that kaguya is an alien. i mean, why else would she need an army if everyone else is under the genjutsu? could the hyuuga be alien as well? possibly, but why don't they share the horn trait of kaguya, because i don't think the horns come from the shinju/fruit.

While I'm essentially spoiling my own plot, here:

I am sticking a bit more hard-core to the concepts of Taoist sages - but I think that will kind of set the tone for my positing.

You may now legitimately claim: "All I read was fanfiction."

The reason why the Hyuuga do not use ninjutsu is because it is unnatural and heretical. Even their 'true abilities' - likely expressed through a "glowing byakugan" - are seen as being a tool to be used with extreme caution for the very reasons that Kaguya embodies.

Ninjutsu is but one of many concepts of mundane interaction. This is where we actually have to delve into Taoist models of the universe:

Which is, perhaps, most simply described here:

and here:

You have the original cycling of primordial Yin and Yang which developed sub-set eddies of relative yin-yang cycling - which gives rise to even more turbulence - which generates the elemental forces of 'the mundane' world.

Ninjutsu, the art of combining the body's energies to elicit the prime phases of the mundane world, is a 'low order' interaction with the universe. It could also be seen as unnatural, as the prime phases should not be so readily extracted for use within the mundane world. Though the 'unnaturalness' of it largely ends with Hagoromo's treachery and granting that power to humans. Ninjutsu is now a natural part of human life - just as tool use is natural to human life even in its most extreme of implements.

Likewise - Kaguya sought power that was not hers for a purpose that was of her decree. The decision may have been 'unnatural' and heretical - but the events spawning from it are completely natural (in fact 'higher order' Taoist philosophy holds that even the acts and path of those who are unnatural is, itself a part of the greater course of nature... though choosing to 'walk the outer path,' as Buddhists would say, is not a decision to be made lightly or impulsively).

Anyway - the Hyuuga, I postulate, do not utilize ninjutsu partially because it is 'beneath' their abilities, and partially because it expresses an attachment to the details of the mundane world.

For example - where a ninja would call forth a gust of wind, a Hyuuga would call upon the wind. Where a ninja would charge with a fist full of lighting, a Hyuuga would call upon the lightning within a storm. The Hyuuga interact at a higher 'tier' of the universe and can possibly 'touch' the Tao, itself.

The Tao is the 'form' upon which the divine inspiration shines - the resulting shadows give rise to yin and yang (as well as the infinite progression of yin-yang cycling). The goal of taoist internal alchemy is to attain the essence of divinity (some descriptions hold this as being permanent, others hold it as being a temporary state) - of grasping "true yang." This is likely the end goal of the Naruto series - a process known as the formation of the Elixir of Life or the Elixir of Immortality.

This is what the 'glowing byakugan' would represent - grasping the divine light (or at least, a higher order of yang). The abilities it comes with would literally make the wielder a force of nature. Though I am sure there would be differences in magnitude. Obviously, Kaguya would seek the fruit of the Juubi to allow herself to be able to call forth the storms to produce lightning.

Though I am speculating on the existence of the abilities and what form they would take.

Regardless, the "spiral" is a common symbol within Taoism -

The Eight Trigrams Seal.

An Uzumaki technique.

While the Eight Trigrams Seal is left behind on those who evoke the Dead Demon Consuming Seal - it seems it can be used with some kind of altar, as well.

The exact nomenclature seems to vary - with references to the "Eight Trigrams Seal" as well as the "Four Symbols" or "Four Elements" seal - though there seem to be few visual distinctions between them.

The whole affair seems to indicate an exchange of Uzumaki tactics and Hyuuga knowledge quite some time ago. Its involvement in the Dead Demon

would seem to indicate a purpose behind this exchange of knowledge.

"But... Aim - Kaguya is back ... shouldn't that theory be shot to hell?"

Not necessarily. It is actually kind of ironic that I started on the Taoist concepts of Qui Jing, and Shen - in another thread not too long before it became known that Black Zetsu is Kaguya's will (though Madara seemed to think it was his own will).

Black Zetsu represents Kaguya's Shen.

The Dead Demon represents Kaguya's Qui - hence its hunger for a soul (the Shen).

White Zetsu represents raw Jing - a blank body with no energy or soul.

Though it is possible Kaguya's Jing is somehow imprisoned within the RDS/DDCS. Right now, her Shen has assumed authority over Madara's Qui and ... whatever the hell comprises his Shen.

This is, probably, why Infinite Tsukuyomi does not work on Edo Tensei constructs... though that gets into hybridizing Shinto legend with Taoist principles... and that can go all kinds of sideways.

But, by time my "Theory to rule them all" can be properly researched and completed, the series will have been done for about five years (or into the next arc).

I actually used to think Kishimoto was random until I picked up on the taoist underpinnings and began to research them further. He's been chomping at the bit to get a lot of this stuff out that he's had planned since he started Naruto. That's partly why the war arc sucks - much like how, in one of my stories, I got into such a rush of wanting to put ideas onto paper that I wasn't giving them time to properly flow together. Which is what the war arc is. "This is my awesome idea... oh... and monologue to explain it.... probably could have done that better...."

But with a release time table and everything - he is kind of on a sort of author's treadmill. He's got to keep the story going or risk his contract - which is probably why we have awkward breaks into flashbacks so often.

But I digress from the original point of this post.
