Purpose of hidden sound village

I'm confused as to what purpose that village served to oro. Was it just created so he could perform experiments and nobody would know?

Something like that. Probably just so he could make up whatever rules he wanted, and didn't have to follow someone else's orders. I honestly don't know though.

Pretty much, this way he can gain subordinates or w.e without suspicion.

Pretty sure it was to get in to the chunin exams so he and his students could spy and carry out missions inside the village in preparation for his main assault on the leaf.

Basically and so that he had a place to stay at since I don't think he was suppose to enter the other nations

Perhaps after Hiruzen chose Minato to succeed him as Hokage, Orochimaru decided to create his own village and become its leader...
