I think it's because Sasuke hadn't shown them his eyes yet, so Hashirama assumed he was innocent (black eyes), that's why he revealed his Mangekyou Sharingan.

"pure" as in " no sharingan". From what they said, the Sharingan has a corrupting effect on their soul. Sasuke did not have the eyes activated until after that interchange, so Hashirama assumed he did not develop it at all. From how it was phrased, it seems that darkness is inevitable once the sharingan starts developing. I suspect that to negate it, one must have enormous will power and to either love someone or be loved by someone. This can explain why only Itachi was able to withstand the corrupting influence of the sharingan, and perhaps why Sasuke has still not descended completely into evil (having the love of his brother and his comrades).
