Gaara is my favorite character, but I'm fairly sure Itachi could beat him. I wouldn't base that off the Gaara/Deidara fight or Deidari/Itachi fight though, as Gaara was both fighting Deidara and defending his village at the same time. Who knows who would've won if he was just fighting, can only speculate really. I'm nearly positive Itachi would win based off of how clever he is in battle, and his Yata mirror is supposed to block any attack according to what Zetsu said. Plus, Itachi is a genjutsu master.

I think gaara from the war could win dunno about before that. But amaterasu doesnt work as proven by gaara vs sasuke. Susanoo has defenses easily subverted with sand (see madara vs gaara) totsuka is a medium range attack, gaara is a long range fighter with his flying sand nimbus. Tsukyomi is itachis true trump card here but I think gaara could take it. Kakashi managed to stay concious for a bit after taking tsukuyomi and i think gaara has better mental defense than kakashi after all the shukaku stuff. (arguably he is really fragile mentally but I think he isn't anymore and he is actually really strong mentally now)

Sasuke was ready to challenge Itachi in the chunin exams, and Sasuke isn't stupid. Chunin exams Gaara > Chunnin Exam Sasuke > Itachi.

Itachi use Ama, Gaara blocks negg diff with absolute defense.

Uses Totsuka,, Gaara blocks neg diff.

Uses Yata, Gaara uses his sand to get around it.

Uses gen, blocks negg diff, but if Itachi happens to land a hit, then Gaara falls asleep thus allowing shukaku to take over Gaara's body and enter BM, and then Shukaku shrekts Itachi.

Itachi uses Izanami, and Gaara becomes purified and then becomes a Perfect Host, thus only making Gaara stronger.
