well seeing as i have both a Xbox 360 (first gen elite) and a PS3 (new slim version) I would go with which ever console you think you would get the most use out of but for the sake of debating i'll outline some features of both the Xbox and the PS3.
Exclusives for Xbox 360
- the Halo Series: one of the best FPS ever created. if multiplayer is your thing than handsdown Halo 3 and Halo Reach is where you want to play. It also helps that Bungie is one of the best developers when it comes to fan support.
- Forza Motorsports: right now the best racing sim out right now. graphics are just what you expect from a console like the 360. However Turn10 has really upset 90 percent of their fanbase by the announcemtn of a new version of Forza Motorsports 3 that includes cars that people who bought the game at prior can't access for probably 3 months. so if you going to get a racing game for your console get a PS3 and wait GT5.
- Mass Effect series: the best RPG/TPS created. game play is great, story sucks you in and makes you forget how long you've been playing (I can spend all day playing it and not even realize it). The graphics are some of the best. PS3 fans don't fear, Mass Effect 1 and 2 will be coming to the PS3 so you can enjoy the epic story that is Mass Effect, but for now you can only watch in envy
- Gears of War series: gotten high reviews for both the campaign and the multiplayer. though i've only played a bit of the first game if you like those types of games its a good one. (i didn't particularly enjoy it but thats my opinion)
i'd include others but those are the games that i play so thats where my expertise lies
PS3 exclusives
- The Uncharted series: two of the absolute best action/adventure games created. everything from the graphics to the game play to the story are top notch. they were the first games i got for my PS3 and one of the main reasons I got the console and they are worth it!
- God of War series: just a bloody good time. they ported the first 2 GoW to the PS3 as a greatest hits and they are just great fun. (unfortunately i havn't gotten to play them a lot since i have other games for the Xbox and the PS3)
- Gran Tourismo series - Still the best racing sim available. Though GT5 hasn't been released yet i'm excited about the game, especially since Turn10 is alienating their fan base.
and now unto graphics. Really theres no real difference between the graphics on each system. the PS3 might have an edge because of the hardware and the use of bluray discs for the game discs but I ahve a 40" 1080p tv and i can't notice a difference, especially from the same games. so the only difference in graphics may be the graphics done by the developers.
online community - yes the ps3 has a free version that allows players to play against each other, but Xbox Live is still the best place to play multiplayer games and other options that the PS3 doesn't get.
Price - I would have initially said the Xbox 360, but since Sony lowered the price of the PS3 to be competitive there really is no difference between the two.
Movie playback - I feel this is important because only the PS3 has the ability to play HD movies because it uses Bluray so it can play Bluray movies where the Xbox 360 can't. The PS3 also can play 3D movies without the need for any special hardware for the console itself. If Bluray or 3D is important to you than the PS3 is the place to go.
Closing thoughts - If I was Sony, I would make some sort of removable battery for the PS3 controller because I've already had one die on me, though I just exchanged it and all was well. another thing about the PS3 i don't really like is that it doesn't auto-detect what type of cable is connected to the console, its a minor hassle since all you have to do is hold the power button when you first turn it one till you hear a second beep and the cable settings is reset.
its my opinion that no matter which console you choose you can not go wrong and you'll be happy with either one.
