not really, am quit sure the artist chose that look/style for him on purpose. you don't need the overused shiny good looking lead character to make a badass U_U (rough around the edges/battle damaged is sometimes better), these stories are mostly about hero's saving the day NOT a beauty contest.

Most protagonists are generally tailored to be 'average'. It's just that generally there aren't any disfigured characters in anime/manga. (Unless it's like scars or something for the badass factor)
Generally you rely on the opinions of the supporting cast to figure out where the protagonists rate on the looks scale. ._.

I'm a dude so I can't rate other dudes by their looks, but I suggest you try out My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. The girls call the MC unattractive and he's a loner. Say he's got the eyes of a dead fish.
