It boils down to personal preference. One guy can argue Madara wanted to lose to make the world think he was dead, another guy could argue he wanted to finally settle his longstanding rivalry with Hashirama and eliminate a potential threat to IT at the same time. Either way he'd still get Hashirama's meat, so it's all about opinion.
