For one, all madara wanted from the start is to cast infinite Tsukuyomi.
For two, even if he defeated Hashirama, he knew that no one would side with him.
Here, proves that madara just wanted to take Hashi's DNA,
Instead of biting him, he could've easily put him in genjutsu and kill him, or use kenjutsu to kill Hashi and end the fight.
The creator of the shinobi world states that he deceived the uchiha into casting infinite Tsukuyomi which would save them.
BZ states that madara lost however, but what he didn't know is that it was according to madara's plan.
Then BZ corrects himself implying that it was madara's plan by saying madara wasn't stupid, he died on purpose.
madara was able to go in hiding without having anyone know of his existence and awake the rinnegan.
Madara knew that Hashi was the successor of the failed world, so he decided to let Hashi live in it. Simply because if he did kill him, the 5 nations would seek madara in on out anyways.
He even said that he planned on what he was currently doing.
So it was the smartest thing to do for madara at that time,
Fake a death, obtain the rinnegan, and cast infinite Tsukuyomi
So madara didn't need to win, just get the tools to solo the world. Like he did in canon.
