So this is one of those weird thoughts that tends to float in and out of my head from time to time and I figured I'd throw it out there to all of you and see what input you have.

The word is thermometer, a device that measures temperature. Most, if not every person I've heard says it ther-mom-eh-ter. Now we have the word thermo which covers the changing of temperature and we have the word meter which is a device used to measure. So why is the word not pronounced Thermo-meter? Wouldn't that be the most logical way of saying what it is?

Well, I'm running out of brownies, to the kitchen. Discuss.

According to it is as ther-mom-i-ter
I know how it's pronounced but I'm saying we already have the word thermo and the word meter yet when we put them together(with their actual meanings still in use) we change the way they are pronounced. It would make much more sense if they were thermo-meter's.

The "m" is silent. -shrugs-
Not even close to the point -shrugs-

Thats the pronounciation in german;
tɛʁmoˈmeːtɐ

Just sayin
Did not know that, good to know.

Oh I see, you're asking that type of question. Simply put, it sounds better or has just been agreed upon to said that way. A lot of languages have things that make no sense but that is how the language works.

You would be surprised at how many people can't even spell knive correctly. Oh, did I misspell that? That's the point....It's kniFe! There is only a V in there when you are writing the Plural for knife.

KNIVES.

Really some people.

On to the topic.

Interesting thing Languages. Thermometer is translated as Termometer (in Afrikaans). It's a HARD sounding T...like Tank. Dutch speakers could probably understand what I mean...

Why does we use "ph" like phone, It should just be fone. Easier to write, fewer words, endof ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
In my language a pronounced sound corresponds with a written letter. So if you pronounce a word 'PHONE'... this is how you actually prononce it: FōN, you only hear three sounds, right? So in my language spelling rule says that you only need to write these three letters/sounds you hear, so FON.
It is easier, much easier to learn to write than English.

OT: If you would pronounce it seperately it just sounds weird. Every word in English has a certain flow which is, basically, presented with accents that you have. And in some cases that flow changes not just when you create a new word ( by adding existing word ) but with grammatical inflections for example, or even in different contexts.
Is is logical? No.
But languages are not built on logical things only and you can notice that the best in English.
