It was the night of the full moon in the month of Sun's Height.
The sky had been overcast since dawn. The air felt damp and the heat and humidity were stifling. It was only from twilight that the cool winds calmed those of Tamriel. It must have been raining somewhere west. The breeze moved, bringing waves of coolness. A little while later, dark cloud gathered in the heights, shadowing the hills and mountains. The dark sky was lowering slowly. After a long while, the rain, dark rain, fell heavily.
Swords of lightning stabbed through the dark treetops as they swayed in the monsoon wind . After the slashes of twisting, turning, dying light, came the sudden burst of thunder. A Thu'um. A shout that activated the devastating force of nature, of Wind and Lightning that majestically demonstrated it's dominance. The land was awake. The land was preparing for another birth.
It was Alh'eim first child. A child born out of the season.
The women of the neighborhood gathered on the courtyard of that small house on the side of the hill. Master Arangar walked up and down through the crowd, his heartbeats refusing to settle down into regularity. The flame of the lantern kept in doorway rose with the wind and then quietened down again. Arangar continued walking up and down, leaving small footmarks on the drizzle wet floor. It was pregnancy that had come very late. Alh'eim had undertaken such vows and penances for this; she had gone to so many temples. Oh Goodness! Mighty Eight! Keep her away from harm. Separate them into two at the appointed time. The women enjoyed Arangar's anxiety. They whispered to each other and laughed. They had seen so many pregnancies and deliveries. Arangar was a first-timer.
In the room, Lady Kyra, the mid-wife sat with her legs stretched out and chewed betel leaves even as she recited prayers. She sat and massaged her legs in time with rythms and her huge earrings swung from her dangling ears. The wait was unending. When his legs ached from his aching,Arangar retreated to the damn darkness of the northern corner and curled up in cane chair. The women murmured and tittered again.
The sky is pouring down, friends, some said. That is true, someone else nodded. After a long and unusually terrible hot season, after an interval when it had seemed a stranger, Arangar had become the old Arangar again.
