Especially when Hiruzen nearly pooped his pants in response to a simple chakra spike by Hashi, and later commented that Juubito was "Even stronger than [Hashirama]." Implying that Hashirama was the strongest of that group and it was unfathomable that Juubito was above him.

As for Iruka's comment, no one knew how powerful Hashirama really was. Hiruzen also didn't disagree with Iruka... in fact, Hiruzen was upset about Iruka using the past-tense.
