The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (竹取物語 Taketori Monogatari?), also known as Princess Kaguya (かぐや姫 Kaguya Hime?, 赫映姫 or 輝夜姫), is a 10th-century Japanese folktale. It is considered the oldest extant Japanese narrative[1][2] and an early example of proto-science fiction.[3].....

Yep.

And though The tree is supposed to be the God tree, it's acting like the Vampire tree, Jyubokko, of Japanese myth. In Japanese mythology Jyubokko (樹木子, Vampire Tree) or Jubokko is a kind of tree spirit, which is said to feed off the energy of humans.
