Ace has long black hair, and childish freckles all over his face. He wears a large red bead necklace around his neck. He usually walks around with no shirt on. He also wears an orange hat with two faces on it, one smiling the other frowning. Perhaps his most prominent feature is the big purple tattoo on his back. He got it long ago in honor of his dead friend Whitebeard. He also has another tattoo on his arm with the letters ASCE with the letter S crossed off because people kept spelling his name wrong. Ace is of average height, but is well muscled.

Ace is a very carefree individual. He is very polite, and easy going. Although he would not hesitate to defend a comrade or friend. He is very loyal, to the point where he attacked a much more powerful ninja for insulting a friend. Ace is fun loving, kind, and will not hesitate to help a friend in danger. Ace also has a very strong will, he never gives up on his goals no matter how impossible they may seem. Ace once pursued a traitor ninja for days, for killing a comrade and showed no mercy when he caught him. Ace has another quality that makes him different from everyone else, it's called the Will of D. People with the letter D. as their last name are always fun loving, carefree, and above all love freedom.

Background Information
History :
The story of Portgas D. Ace begins in the leaf village. Here he was born to the infamous Uchiha clan. He decided that he hated their clan customs, and ran away to become a pirate which led to him avoiding the uchiha massacre. While on the seas, he formed a crew of pirates that he called the spade pirates. They were very loyal to him, and he was also loyal to them. They spent years on the sea being carefree and happy. Eventually, they encountered a pirate unlike any other his name was Whitebeard. Ace wanted to kill him to make a name for himself, but was unable to. He tried many times, and many different ways until finally Whitebeard kidnapped him and his crew.
Ace kept trying to kill whitebeard for years, until finally he accepted that Whitebeard was a kind man. He then became a Whitebeard Pirate. He quickly rose through the ranks and became commander of the second division. He also became friends with a man named Thatch, one day Thatch found a strange weapon. He bragged about it, and eventually another Whitebeard pirate heard about it and realized it was the very same weapon he was searching for. The other pirate killed Thatch and fled the Whitebeard pirates for years. Eventually Ace caught up to him and killed him as he begged for mercy.
After that event, Ace returned to the Whitebeard pirates. They welcomed him as a hero, and he made many new friends there. Unfortunately, the peace wasn't meant to last. One day, Whitebeard robbed a ship but was ambushed by high level ninja from Kiri. He was targeted because he had been stealing from Kiri for years, and now they wanted their revenge. Kiri decided to execute Whitebeard in public, to serve as a lesson for all other pirates. On the day of the execution, Ace led the Whitebeard pirates to free Whitebeard. The battle was vicious, blood flowed like water throughout the streets. Finally on the third day they reached Whitebeard, Ace himself unchained Whitebeard. It seems though, that luck was not on their side. As they were preparing to escape tragedy struck, a stray kunai managed to fatally wound Whitebeard. As Whitebeard lay dying, Ace searched for the man that threw the kunai. He could not find him, but it could have been from either kiri or the pirates. Ace screamed with rage as Whitebeard his mentor, and friend finally departed from the world.
After Whitebeard died Ace grew sick of piracy, partly because of Whitebeard's death and partly because the kunai that killed him may have come from one of their own men. He then left and simply wandered the land until he came upon a village in the dessert. He went in, and he discovered a grand village called Sunagakure. When he first walked in, he saw a strange man running with the kool-aid guy, and another man running around with the ramen guy he recognized from the Leaf. He then asked if he could join the village, and when he was accepted a new chapter began in Ace's life.
