Popular Smash Bros. Commentator Wynton "Prog" Smith Retires at 27; Severe Ilness
Famed gaming commentator for Super Smash Bros. Melee Wynton Smith, more well known as Prog, will be stepping down from the competitive scene as a result of an unknown illness that has been ongoing for 18 months. He stated that he loses his breath sometimes, has physical body pain, and has trouble walking sometimes. Prog is 27 at the moment.
His last tournament that he'll be commentating is EVO 2014, the world's largest fighting game tournament series which begins July 11-13. Prog was the primary commentator for SSBM at EVO 2013, which featured the game for the first time through a charity competition, attracting an incredible 800+ entrants for the game and becoming the most watched fighting game at it with over 100,000 viewers on the live stream. As a result, the Melee scene has grown a lot, and has one of the largest competitive fanbases in the world, for fighting games and any game for that matter. Prog was also selected to commentate at the Smash Bros. 4 Invitational at E3 2014 with D1 and Scar
Even if you aren't a fan of SSBM competitively or casually, Prog's situation is very saddening and upsetting for me, as watching matches with him and partner D1 commentating and hyping so much were outstanding, and he is one of the main reasons why over the years I was influenced to become a competitive player at that game, which has had a surprisingly great impact on my life.
Pray for him as I am, and I hope he can fight off the illness as much as possible.
