At that time almost everybody in Germany was part of any Nazi organization!
Why?
The Nazis had already infiltrated the whole system.
Lots of people got pressure to join.
Teens, like Ratzinger, were even forced by law to join them. It was a duty like school.
On the other hand greetings like “Heil Hitler” had already become normal routine. Nobody was questioning it anymore.
That was the shameful reality at that time.
Of course this explanation sucks and it is still questionable: Did they really only join because of pressure? Did people really not realize what this was all about? Why could it have happened?
I haven’t found any answer yet so I can’t say much to you, either.
But after all I know we can’t judge Benedict the 16th being a Nazi only from those pictures.
I think he was in a situation he had to put on the uniform.
