Smack the trespasser up, as long as you don't have mens rea (the intention of committing an unlawful act) in a defensive situation which I doubt anyone would have while trying to defend themselves and their home, you can't get charged.

Trespassers are either methodical, and hence, armed to the teeth, or are just crazy strong due to being strung out on meth. Either case, using only your fists is suicide. Something like gun would be much more appropreate.

If an assailant has an AK-47, he can fire 6000 armor piercing rounds into someone's home before the police even shows up.

That is very much true. I've rarely heard cases where the police made it in time unless it was one of those rare cases where the criminal held victims hostage instead of killing them outright.
