Pokemon x or y? Help

So pretty soon I'm going to buy a 2ds and I was wondering if there was any difference between pokemon x and y, I asked my friend but he said just get pokemon y. Let's say for example I get pokemon x and he has y would I still be able to play with my friend. Also is there a difference in the story mode. Also I've only played the original pokemon red and fire red would this game be hard to understand or do they explain all the different types and stuff. And my final question would be about mega evolutions do you they all differ between games or what, which one do you think is better! Thanks for your time and hopefully someone in here can help me.

just some pokemon and megastones that are version exclusive but you can still trade from game to game

The only difference that I can think of are Pokemon (and the respective Mega Stones/MEvolutions).

Xerneas is more over-powered than Yveltal so buy Pokemon X, but Yveltal looks cooler. So choose the Pokemon that suits you best.

I like the legendary in y but I like the megas in x so I got x. Im like you ive really only played gen 1 and 2 but I do love this one. Its bad ass
