If you are using an iPhone to play Pokemon Go do not update it. If you update it you will be signed up and then unable to log back in.

are you using a google account or a pokemon trainers club?
it doesn't work for PTC but it will work for the Google login
I would suggest not using Google to login since in the ToS you agree that the app developer can have access to ALL of your google account i.e. emails, pictures, docs, etc.
