I think after the blast he couldnt survive alone if he suffered the dmg from the TBB , so i guess someone who helped him , Ao had to give something in return. and Who knows how long Ao was away ... he said himself he didnt come back to the village 40 years ?
40 years are a lot of time ... so in exchange of his life, he started working with Kara' members. or they simply put him some sort of seal if he tries to betrayed them or something

He said 16 years not 40, he'd be really old if 40 years passed. :lol
